Miles Smiles @ Lew and You
featuring Lew Soloff and the Cincinnati Contemporary Jazz Orchestra
Saturday, October 20, 2012 at 8:00pm

Just over 50 years ago, Miles Davis and Gil Evans created two of the most important and memorable recordings in jazz, Porgy and Bess and Sketches of Spain. Among the first to fuse classical music and jazz, they helped to create what Gunther Schuller dubbed the Third Stream. At this concert, jazz legend Lew Soloff and the Cincinnati Contemporary Jazz Orchestra perform both works in their entirety, using charts Evans wrote for these monumental recordings. Best known for his work with Blood, Sweat and Tears, Lew has recorded with Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter and the Kronos quartet, among many, and had long relationships with Gil Evans and Ornette Coleman. He was lead trumpet in the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band and first trumpet in the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. Lew performs regularly in the U.S. and Europe.
