This tour de force is Cincinnati's best-kept secret
Modern Mix closes Mutual Dance Theatre's 55th anniversary season on the Aronoff Center's Jarson-Kaplan Theater mainstage: four very different choreographers, four choreographies, one tour de force of dance.
Modern Mix is an annual series that connects our immensely talented resident company with national guests and our own resident creations. Each attention-demanding iteration creates surprising juxtapositions and rising popularity.
This 2027 program reprises two seminal works created in-house: Steven P. Evans, a former Mutual Dance Theatre company director, returns with Petrichor (2023). Named for the scent of rain after a long dry spell, dancers move beneath relief made visible: an ascending and descending canopy of lightbulbs. Artistic Director Jeanne Mam-Luft's /SHIFT/ (2014) is a beloved, powerful work depicting a society after a catastrophic event that led to changes in power. /SHIFT/ holds the Mutual Dance Theatre record for juried festivals across the country and returns to the stage where it began.
Hana Delong's choreographic chops were first noticed by Mutual Dance Theatre director Jeanne Mam-Luft when presented here in 2023. A member of Dallas Black Dance Theatre for many years and a furniture maker (!), Delong trained at the Ailey School and has performed in works by such greats as Martha Graham, Doug Varone, Matthew Rushing, Alvin Ailey, Hope Boykin, and many others, gracing the stages of Jacob's Pillow, Lincoln Center, and The Joyce.
Rodrigo Almarales makes his Mutual Dance Theatre premiere with a new commission. A former dancer with Cincinnati Ballet, Almarales was born into ballet: both of his parents were principal dancers with Cuba's National Ballet. Almarales trained at Cuba's National School of Art, Canada's National Ballet School, and the Hamburg Ballet School before dancing with Deutsche Oper am Rhein and Boston Ballet.

For the comfort and enjoyment of your fellow audience members, and to not distract those around you and/or the performers onstage, please:
- Turn off your cell phone and/or other noise making devices. The sound and light from these items can be disruptive. If you use your cell phone at intermission, turn it off before the performance begins again.
- Refrain from singing along or making loud disruptive comments during the performance. Although we want you to be engaged, this type of behavior can be very disturbing to others in the audience and onstage.

- Be patient with the restroom and concessions lines. We know the lines are long, and the space may be tight, but everyone always gets their turn before the performance begins.
- Be courteous and respectful of others when consuming concessions.
