Gemma New’s magnetic artistry guides the CSO in a century-spanning celebration of musical imagination. Maria Grenfell’s Bach-infused fugue, Clockwerk, whirs with playfulness and counterpoint. Cincinnati favorite Conrad Tao joins the Orchestra for Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 23, a work whose radiant melodies and intimate lyricism never fail to captivate. Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 1 with its charming deceptions and effervescent humor embody the very spirit of neo-classic modernism. The program concludes with Haydn’s London Symphony, a crowning achievement of the Classical era.
