Dance Photographs from the Halsted Collection

The Cincinnati Arts Association and the Weston Art Gallery in the Aronoff Center for the Arts presents Dance Photographs from the Halsted Collection, compiled by dance historian Carol Halsted and based in the Halsted Gallery in Birmingham, Michigan.

Carol Halsted, who is a dance historian and Chairperson of the Department of Music, Theater and Dance at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan, has shaped a superb collection of photographs of famous dancers and choreographers shot by equally famous photographers. The exhibition, which presents 49 pieces from 1912 to 1992, includes images of Vaslav Nijinsky, Tamara Karsavinaand Adolph Bolm by E. O. Hoppe (1912); Anna Pavlovaby Arnold Genthe (1920); Isadora Duncan by Edward Steichen (1921); Hanya Holm by Lotte Jacobi (1950); Martha Graham (1950), George Balanchine and Igor Stravinsky (1972) by Martha Swope; The Moscow Balletby Margaret Bourke White (1930) and Mark Morris and Mikhail Baryshnikov by Annie Liebowitz (1990), to name but a few. Major figures in both classical ballet and the pioneers of modern dance are represented in stunning performance mode or highly nuanced portrait settings.
