Preface

Welcome to the long-overdue Greater Cincinnati Exhibition Opportunities Guide produced by the Weston Art Gallery. The revised and expanded 2nd edition contains sites and contacts for Cincinnati-area artists seeking either their first show or an opportunity to continue an already established exhibition record.

As a non-profit exhibition space founded in 1995 by the Cincinnati Arts Association, we are dedicated to supporting and promoting both emerging and professional artists of the region. We are often asked the question, “How do I get a show here?” With this guide, artists can point themselves in the right direction. There is a wide variety of venues included—from restaurants to museums—but it is by no means exhaustive. Listings change frequently.

We have made every attempt to be accurate in our listings and accept responsibility for all errors. Please contact us at the address below with any changes for the next edition. A printable pdf version is available on our Web site.

The road to an exhibition history can be long and rewarding. We hope this guide assists in that process. So be creative, persistent, and professional. Good Luck!

Tip Sheet
If you are new to exhibiting your work it may be a good idea to visit some of the venues listed in this guide to get an idea where your work may fit in. When just starting out, some alternative spaces or cafés might be a good place to begin. Most commercial galleries want to see an established body of work and an exhibition history before representing an artist. Call ahead to see what the venues expect when screening work. Sometimes it is acceptable to stop in and drop off a card or resume, but do not expect anyone to discuss your work or review a portfolio without an appointment.
When ready to approach galleries or other venues for shows, follow the points below:
  • Contact venues first to ask about selection procedures.
  • Most venues want to see slides or digital images first, not actual work—unless you’re hosting a studio visit.
  • When sending slides, always label each one with your name and mailing address, as well as the title, medium, dimensions, and an indication of the top. Electronic submissions should follow a similar format. Request the proper format in advance.
  • Include a SASE with the appropriate postage for the weight of the materials you are sending to ensure that they will be returned to you, otherwise they may be discarded.
  • Keep a running list of places to which you have sent materials. That way you can track responses and returns.
  • Some places, especially those run by collectives of artists, will have a nominal fee or deposit for applications and the use of their space. Always check first so you know what to expect.
  • It is acceptable to ask when to expect a reply or return of your materials.
  • Keep a friendly demeanor and sense of humor about your pursuit. Acceptances and rejections are based on a wide range of criteria.
