CINCINNATI, OH – The Cincinnati Arts Association (CAA) will present its annual Overture Academy on Saturday, October 3 at the Aronoff Center for the Arts. The Academy helps talented artists in grades 7-12 improve their skills through interactive workshops and master classes, including such topics as audition preparation, warm up techniques, stage presence, and preparation and performance tips. The morning session will be dedicated to a class for all disciplines, and the afternoon breakout sessions will give students an opportunity to take a class especially designed for their specific discipline. One of the unique benefits that the Academy offers is providing both general and specialized training and guidance to aspiring artists who wish to pursue a career in the arts. In addition, students receive coaching and critical assessments of their work, encouragement and advice. Students enjoy meeting their peers from other high schools and sharing experiences, ideas and dreams together. “Whether students want to take the next step toward a career in the arts or simply improve an audition piece, the Overture Academy has something to offer everyone who participates,” says Steve Finn, CAA’s Director of Education. The Academy is free to students, parents, and school counselors and advanced registration is required. Lunch is provided as part of the full day of activities. The Overture Academy is affiliated with the Overture Awards Scholarship competition, which annually awards $24,000 in scholarships to talented high school artists from the Tri-state in six artistic disciplines (creative writing, dance, instrumental and vocal music, theater and visual art). Each year, more than 450 students representing 80 local schools compete for a chance to make the Finals Competition and perform at the Aronoff Center. Now in its fourteenth year, the Overture Awards Scholarships have become extremely prestigious. Student winners and finalists proudly include their awards on resumes and college applications as a means of standing out as they compete for limited slots at the finest colleges and conservatories. ATTIRE: Comfortable dance clothing Seeing through the Eye of a Camera 12:30-2:00 p.m. INSTRUCTOR: Lisa Britton teaches photography at the Art Academy of Cincinnati and works as a photojournalist at the University of Cincinnati. Since 1986, Lisa has frequently shown exhibitions of her fine art photography locally and internationally. WORKSHOP: What is photographic vision? How can it be expressive and capture the imagination? What makes an image intriguing? We will look to former master photographers as well as kid’s images to seek answers and follow up with a brief hands-on workshop with our own cameras. EQUIPMENT: Students should bring a camera with a flash. In And Out Of Time: New Composition, Old Notes 12:15-2:00 p.m. Instructor: Dr. Philip Koplow is a past composer-in-residence at Northern Kentucky University. He received his musical education at Kent State University and the Cleveland Institute of Music. Dr. Koplow’s work has been performed by many regional orchestras and by the principal orchestras of Cincinnati, Cleveland, Los Angles, Columbus and Washington D.C. He is also proud to have written music for youth and school groups. Guest Artist: Ellen C. Stephens, cello WORKSHOP: Using improvisatory and alternate notation techniques, students will learn how a composer works and performs, and record a new “folk song” inspired piece. EQUIPMENT: Students should bring their musical instrument(s). A Writer’s Life: College and Beyond 2:30-4:00 p.m. Instructor: Eric Goodman is the Director of Creative Writing at Miami University. In addition, he is also a screenwriter, journalist and the author of four published novels, including most recently, Child of My Right Hand. WORKSHOP: Learn how to prepare yourself for a writer’s life in college and beyond. What should you major in? What are reasonable expectations of success and when might you expect to achieve it? How do you know if you’re really a writer? How can you become the best writer you can be? “Improv” Acting 2:30-4:00 p.m. Instructor: Spring Starr Pillow graduated from Northern Kentucky University with a degree in Musical Theatre Performance, and is currently employed as the music/drama teacher for St. William School. She has performed with the Ensemble Theatre of Cincinnati, Cincinnati Children’s Theatre, the Showboat Majestic, the Covedale Center for Performing Arts, and a few bands around town. In addition, Spring is a resident choreographer for Mercy High School and teaches private voice. WORKSHOP: Join Spring Starr Pillow for an exciting and invigorating improvisation workshop. You will engage in several different exercises that will enhance your performance ability, give you more self confidence, and help you to “think on your feet.” Improvisation is an integral part of acting and can benefit each actor in individual ways. Even for the finest actors, there are moments where split second choices make all the difference in performance. Learning to be comfortable in those choices is the whole point of learning Improv. This workshop will free the actor to make the right choices – by committing to the unknown, getting out of his/her head, and being in the present moment. Art Songs from Italy 2:30-4:00 p.m. Instructor: Barbara Paré is an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Music at DePauw University. She has extensive solo and operatic experience and has performed with a variety of nationally-known organizations, including the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and the Cincinnati Opera Summer Festival. She is also an adjudicator for several musical organizations. WORKSHOP: Why do young singers begin with Italian, not English? Why do we begin with the "26 Italian Songs and Arias"? Are there other sources of Italian repertoire for the beginning singer? Are these standard songs appropriate for college auditions? Ms. Paré will answer these important questions and give a short history of Italian song and pedagogy. Singers are encouraged to participate in a short Master Class following the presentation. # # # | TICKETS & EVENTS
