Founded in 1989 and based in Berlin, the Artemis Quartet is unquestionably one of the world’s great string quartets, touring regularly in the U.S., Europe, South America, and Japan. It debuted at the Berlin Philharmonie in 1999 and since 2004 has presented its own critically acclaimed chamber music series in that legendary hall. In 2011, it was named quartet in residence at the Vienna Konzerthaus.
The Artemis has recorded exclusively for Virgin Classics/EMI since 2005, winning a Gramophone Award, the Diapason d’Or, and the ECHO-Klassik (twice). To celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2009, the quartet performed the Beethoven cycle over two seasons in Berlin, Vienna, Brussels, Florence, Cologne, Frankfurt, London, Paris and Rome culminating in a recording that won the Grand Prix de l’Académie Charles Cros. Bruno Monsaingeon’s film, 'Strings Attached', is a portrait of the quartet and it’s performance of Beethoven’s Grosse Fuge. The Beethoven-Haus Society has awarded the Artemis an honorary membership to recognize its acclaimed interpretations of Beethoven’s works.
The Artemis Quartet is a favorite of Cincinnati audiences and is performing on our series for a record seventh time. In its biography, the quartet lists Walter Levin of Cincinnati’s LaSalle Quartet first among its mentors, along with Alfred Brendel, the Alban Berg Quartet, the Juilliard Quartet and the Emerson Quartet. Tonight’s performance includes three of the great works of the string quartet repertoire.
