Overture Awards Scholarship Competition

Dance Criteria

CATEGORIES: Ballet, Modern, Jazz, Tap, Urban/Hip Hop, and Folk/Ethnic dance forms

  1. All criteria set forth below apply to the Regional, Semi-Finals and Finals except where otherwise noted.
  2. Students should perform their best work. Do not choose works that are more difficult than your current level of proficiency to impress the judges.
  3. No parents, teachers or coaches will be allowed in the competition area.
  4. No flash photography is allowed during the competitions.
  5. Open to SOLOISTS ONLY.
  6. It is the responsibility of the competitor to obtain any necessary copyright permission.
  7. Students may perform in any style of dance. A competitor may choose to do more than one selection in their selected style.
  8. Performances will be primarily judged on, but not limited to, the following:
    • Overall skill and technical level
    • Creativity
    • Artistic Expression and potential
    • Mastery of Choreography
    • Coordination
    • Musicality
    • Stage presence
  9. Performances must be more than 1.5 minutes but less than 5 minutes total.
  10. For the Regional and Semi-Finals competition, competitors will be stopped at 5 minutes.
  11. For the Finals Competition, competitors will not be stopped, however, time is being kept and the judges will deduct points from the competitors score.
  12. Competitors need not perform the same piece(s) they perform at Regionals if they advance to the Semi-Finals and Finals Competitions.
  13. Students must bring their own CD (no cassettes, records or mini disks please), which has only the selected piece(s) of music on it. The piece(s) must be cued. CD players are provided.
  14. COSTUMES: For the Regional and Semi-Final Competitions, costumes are optional. For Finals Competition, costumes are required. Attire must be appropriate for the selection.
  15. Essential props are permitted if they are an integral part of the dance.
  16. CHOREOGRAPHY: need not be original.
  17. Dancers are responsible for warm-up before their auditions. Warm-up space is provided. For Semi-Finals and Finals Competition, students will be allowed to walk the dance competition area prior to their performance.
  18. Rosin will be provided.
  19. Marley floors will be provided.
