Russ Childers

Banjo from Africa to America

This unique cultural diversity presentation reveals the cross-cultural transport and continental drift of the five-string banjo from its African origins to the southern Appalachian Highlands. Examples of its evolution are exhibited as well as a demonstration of the different playing styles, showing African, Celtic, and Native American influences. Russ will discuss banjo construction materials – from gourd to real-life groundhog skin to recycled tin can – showing how early banjo creators made music with what was at hand, and a fascinating mini-history lesson. With a live performance of the music to illustrate the migration of the banjo from Africa to the Appalachian Highlands, audiences gain an insight into the rich cultural diversity reflected in one of America’s oldest traditional music forms.
