Appalachian Culture through Music & Stories

For more than 35 years, Appalachian musician, singer and storyteller Russ Childers has embodied the rich history and culture of eastern Kentucky in his performances. In this interactive performance, he mixes music with recycling to show how mountain people used what they had in order to make what they needed, including musical instruments.

Technical Needs

  • Artist Arrival: 30 minutes prior to performance
  • Organization representative should meet the artist and show him to the presentation area.
  • Four people needed to assist with unloading equipment.
  • Audience participation: singing
  • There is a Question and Answer session following the presentation, lasting five minutes.
  • Equipment needed by artist:
    • table
    • chair
    • if over 100 children: two microphones with stands (one for vocal and one for instrument)
  • Classroom or large gathering space is suitable for this presentation. Minimum amount of space needed for presentation: 10’ x 10’.
  • Please have drinking water provided for the artist.
